Dirt Cake Recipe

Introduction

Dirt Cake is a nostalgic, no-bake dessert that’s as fun to make as it is to eat. With layers of creamy pudding, whipped topping, and crushed chocolate cookies, it looks just like a pot of edible “dirt.” It’s perfect for parties, holidays, kids’ activities, or any dessert table. You can even decorate it with gummy worms or edible flowers for a playful touch.

Ingredients

For the Cookie “Dirt”

  • 1 package (14–15 oz) Oreo cookies (or any chocolate sandwich cookies)

For the Cream Filling

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed

For the Pudding Layer

  • 2 packages (3.4 oz each) instant vanilla or French vanilla pudding
  • 3 cups cold milk
  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping (for folding into the pudding)

Optional Decorations

  • Gummy worms
  • Chocolate rocks
  • Mint sprigs (to look like plants)
  • Flowerpot containers or clear cups for serving

Instructions / Method

1. Prepare the Cookie Dirt

  1. Place all cookies in a food processor.
  2. Pulse until finely crushed (you want them to look like potting soil).
No food processor? Place cookies in a zip bag and crush with a rolling pin.

2. Make the Cream Cheese Layer

  1. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract; mix until fluffy.
  3. Fold in 1 tub of whipped topping until smooth and creamy.
  4. Set aside.

3. Make the Pudding Layer

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and cold milk until thickened (about 2 minutes).
  2. Fold in the second tub of whipped topping to make a fluffy pudding cream.

4. Combine Layers

  1. In a large trifle bowl, casserole dish, or individual cups, start with a layer of cookie crumbs.
  2. Spread a layer of cream cheese mixture over the crumbs.
  3. Add a layer of pudding mixture.
  4. Repeat layers until everything is used, ending with cookie crumbs on top.
  5. Add gummy worms or decorations if desired.

5. Chill

  • Refrigerate for at least 2–4 hours, or overnight for the best texture.

Serving

Serve chilled with a big spoon. It’s perfect for parties, potlucks, or a fun kids’ dessert!
