Introduction
If you’re looking for a guilt-free treat with zero added sugar, this simple Apple Cocoa Purée is your answer. Made with just apples and cocoa powder, it delivers a rich, chocolatey flavor balanced by the natural sweetness of slow-cooked apples. Whether you enjoy it warm as a dessert, chilled as a snack, or spread over toast or oatmeal, this two-ingredient recipe proves that less really can be more.
Ingredients
- 4 medium apples (any sweet variety like Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Instructions
Method 1: Stove-Top
- Prepare the apples:
- Peel (optional), core, and dice the apples into small chunks.
- The smaller the pieces, the faster they’ll cook.
- Cook the apples:
- Place the apple pieces in a saucepan with 2–4 tablespoons of water (just enough to prevent sticking).
- Cover and cook on medium-low heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and beginning to break down.
- Add cocoa:
- Once the apples are tender, remove from heat.
- Stir in the cocoa powder.
- Blend:
- Use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender and purée until smooth.
- For a chunkier texture, mash by hand with a fork or potato masher.
- Serve:
- Enjoy warm or chilled.
- Optional: Top with nuts, cinnamon, or coconut flakes (if you’re okay with more ingredients).
Method 2: Oven-Roasted (Deeper flavor)
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare apples:
- Peel (optional), core, and chop into chunks.
- Roast:
- Spread apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Roast for 30–40 minutes, flipping halfway, until soft and caramelized.
- Blend with cocoa:
- Transfer warm apples to a blender or food processor.
- Add cocoa powder and blend until smooth.
Tips
- Use very ripe apples for maximum sweetness.
- Adjust cocoa to taste; 2 tablespoons give a rich flavor, but you can use less or more.
- Stores well in the fridge for up to 5 days. Freezes beautifully, too.
