Apple Cocoa Purée (Naturally Sweet Dessert Spread)

Introduction

If you’re looking for a guilt-free treat with zero added sugar, this simple Apple Cocoa Purée is your answer. Made with just apples and cocoa powder, it delivers a rich, chocolatey flavor balanced by the natural sweetness of slow-cooked apples. Whether you enjoy it warm as a dessert, chilled as a snack, or spread over toast or oatmeal, this two-ingredient recipe proves that less really can be more.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples (any sweet variety like Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

Method 1: Stove-Top

  1. Prepare the apples:
    • Peel (optional), core, and dice the apples into small chunks.
    • The smaller the pieces, the faster they’ll cook.
  2. Cook the apples:
    • Place the apple pieces in a saucepan with 2–4 tablespoons of water (just enough to prevent sticking).
    • Cover and cook on medium-low heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and beginning to break down.
  3. Add cocoa:
    • Once the apples are tender, remove from heat.
    • Stir in the cocoa powder.
  4. Blend:
    • Use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender and purée until smooth.
    • For a chunkier texture, mash by hand with a fork or potato masher.
  5. Serve:
    • Enjoy warm or chilled.
    • Optional: Top with nuts, cinnamon, or coconut flakes (if you’re okay with more ingredients).

Method 2: Oven-Roasted (Deeper flavor)

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare apples:
    • Peel (optional), core, and chop into chunks.
  3. Roast:
    • Spread apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Roast for 30–40 minutes, flipping halfway, until soft and caramelized.
  4. Blend with cocoa:
    • Transfer warm apples to a blender or food processor.
    • Add cocoa powder and blend until smooth.

Tips

  • Use very ripe apples for maximum sweetness.
  • Adjust cocoa to taste; 2 tablespoons give a rich flavor, but you can use less or more.
  • Stores well in the fridge for up to 5 days. Freezes beautifully, too.
