📝 Introduction

This Teriyaki Beef and Avocado Rice Stack is a layered dish that brings together Japanese-inspired flavors with a modern twist. Tender beef is coated in a sticky-sweet teriyaki glaze, layered with creamy avocado and seasoned sushi rice. This dish is not only tasty but also visually striking—stacked neatly in a ring mold for an Instagram-worthy presentation.


🛒 Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

For the Teriyaki Beef:

  • 300g (10 oz) beef sirloin or ribeye, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sake (or water)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water (slurry)

For the Sushi Rice:

  • 1 cup sushi rice
  • 1ÂĽ cup water
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt

For the Avocado Layer:

  • 1 large ripe avocado, diced
  • 1 tsp lime or lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Garnishes (Optional):

  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Sliced scallions
  • Pickled ginger
  • Nori strips
  • Sriracha mayo or Japanese mayo

🔪 Instructions & Method

1. Prepare the Sushi Rice

  1. Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Add rice and 1ÂĽ cups water to a rice cooker or pot. Cook according to instructions (about 15 minutes simmer, then 10 minutes rest).
  3. While hot, gently fold in rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Let it cool to room temperature.

2. Make the Teriyaki Beef

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add garlic and ginger, sauté until fragrant (30 seconds).
  3. Add sliced beef and sear until browned (2–3 minutes).
  4. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, mirin, sake, and brown sugar. Pour into the pan with beef.
  5. Simmer until slightly thickened (about 3 minutes), then stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until glossy.
  6. Set aside to cool slightly.

3. Prepare the Avocado Layer

  1. Dice avocado and gently toss with lime/lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mash lightly for a more cohesive layer (optional).

4. Assemble the Stack

You’ll need a ring mold or cleaned can with both ends removed for stacking.

  1. First Layer: Press a layer of sushi rice into the bottom of the mold. Use a spoon to pack it evenly.
  2. Second Layer: Add a layer of avocado. Smooth it with the back of a spoon.
  3. Third Layer: Top with teriyaki beef. Spoon on a little extra sauce for shine and flavor.

5. Finish and Garnish

  • Carefully lift the mold.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds, scallions, pickled ginger, or a drizzle of spicy mayo.
