Salmon Patties Recipe

🐟 Introduction:

Salmon patties are a timeless comfort food made with flaked salmon, herbs, and breadcrumbs, then pan-fried to golden perfection. They’re budget-friendly, quick to prepare, and packed with protein. Whether using canned or fresh salmon, these patties are great served with a side salad, over rice, or tucked into a sandwich bun. A crisp exterior with a moist, flavorful center makes them a family favorite.

🍽️ Ingredients:

  • 1 can (14-15 oz) salmon, drained, bones and skin removed (or use cooked fresh salmon)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup celery, finely chopped (optional, for crunch)
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, finely chopped (fresh preferred)
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (or sour cream for tang)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (or regular mustard)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 2–3 tablespoons oil (vegetable, olive, or avocado oil for frying)

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Prepare the mixture:
    • In a medium bowl, add the drained salmon and flake it with a fork.
    • Stir in breadcrumbs, onion, celery (if using), parsley, eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
    • Mix until well combined. The mixture should hold together but still be moist. If it’s too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs; if too dry, add a splash of milk or another egg.
  2. Form the patties:
    • Using your hands, shape the mixture into 6–8 equal-sized patties (about 2.5–3 inches wide and ½ inch thick).
    • Place the patties on a plate and chill in the fridge for 15–30 minutes (optional, but helps them hold together better while cooking).
  3. Cook the patties:
    • Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Once hot, add the patties in batches. Do not overcrowd the pan.
    • Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
    • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve warm with a dipping sauce like tartar sauce, garlic aioli, or a squeeze of lemon over the top.
    • Pairs well with coleslaw, rice, roasted veggies, or inside a sandwich bun with lettuce and tomato.

👩‍🍳 Method Tips:

  • For crispier patties, coat each formed patty lightly in extra breadcrumbs before frying.
  • Use fresh herbs (like dill or parsley) to brighten the flavor.
  • Air fryer method: Spray patties with oil and air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Baked method: Bake on a greased sheet at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
