Steak in Creamy Cajun Shrimp Sauce (Surf & Turf)

Introduction:

This Surf & Turf dish brings together a perfectly seared, juicy steak topped with a luscious, creamy Cajun shrimp sauce. The spice from the Cajun seasoning pairs beautifully with the tender shrimp and rich cream, while the steak adds a hearty, satisfying base. Ideal for a special occasion or a cozy night in, this recipe balances bold flavors with simple cooking techniques.

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 2 ribeye or sirloin steaks (about 8 oz each)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter

For the Creamy Cajun Shrimp Sauce:

  • 12 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, finely diced (optional, for color & flavor)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or white wine
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Steaks:

  1. Take the steaks out of the fridge 20-30 minutes before cooking to bring them to room temperature.
  2. Season both sides generously with salt and black pepper.
  3. Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add olive oil.
  4. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add the steaks. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare (adjust timing based on thickness and preferred doneness).
  5. Add butter in the last minute and spoon melted butter over the steaks for extra richness.
  6. Remove the steaks from the pan and let them rest on a plate covered loosely with foil.

2. Make the Creamy Cajun Shrimp Sauce:

  1. In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed. Toss the shrimp with Cajun seasoning and add them to the pan.
  2. Cook shrimp 1-2 minutes per side until just pink and opaque. Remove shrimp and set aside.
  3. Add minced garlic, onion, and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in smoked paprika and cayenne pepper.
  5. Pour in chicken broth or white wine to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits.
  6. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in heavy cream.
  7. Let the sauce simmer for 3-5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Return the shrimp to the sauce, stir in fresh parsley, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Serve:

  1. Plate the rested steaks.
  2. Spoon generous amounts of creamy Cajun shrimp sauce over the steaks.
  3. Garnish with additional fresh parsley.
  4. Serve immediately with your choice of sides—mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a fresh salad work beautifully.

Tips:

  • For an extra smoky flavor, use smoked sea salt on the steak.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper to your spice preference.
  • Letting the steak rest is crucial for juicy results.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with a glass of full-bodied red wine or a crisp white.
