Soft and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Introduction

Few things bring a family together like the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies wafting through the house. These cookies are golden brown on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside, and loaded with melty chocolate chips. Whether it’s for a weekend treat, a bake sale, or a cozy evening with the grandkids, this recipe is a keeper — and it might just become your new family favorite!

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 cup (200g) packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups (270g) semisweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: ½ cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

Instructions / Method

  1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and creamy.
Add in the egg, extra yolk, and vanilla extract, whisking until fully combined.
  4. Bring it all together
Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients using a spatula or wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.
Gently fold in the chocolate chips (and nuts, if using).
  5. Shape the cookies
Scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each one.
  6. Bake to perfection
Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are golden but the centers are still soft.
(They’ll firm up as they cool!)
  7. Cool and serve
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely — if they last that long!

Tips for Success

  • For extra flavor, chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking.
  • Swap chocolate chips for chunks, or mix white and dark chocolate for variety.
  • A sprinkle of sea salt on top before baking adds a gourmet touch.
